The RDEK runs a yellow bin recycling program in the East Kootenay. Most people are familiar with the yellow recycling bins that accept paper, cardboard, tin/aluminum cans, grocery bags, and plastics #1-#6 (no Styrofoam, even though it is marked #6). We also have separate yellow "glass only" bins for food / beverage container glass.
The yellow bin program is the only recycling program the RDEK oversees.
When you purchase items at stores, sometimes you are charged an "eco-fee" or "environmental levy." Those fees go toward what is called an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program, which are regulated by the Province and run under contract by non-profit societies. There are literally hundreds of products that are part of an EPR program and can be recycled in the East Kootenay.
None of the "eco fees" come to the RDEK and these provincial programs operate totally separate from us. We do, however, try to spread the word about the different recycling depots that collect EPR products because we know they will end up in our landfills if people don't know how to properly dispose of them.
Some companies, like ReGeneration, oversee the collection/recycling of a number of different EPR products for different programs so it can be confusing! If you have questions or are unsure of what you can recycle, or where, we will do our best to help. Call our office at 250-489-2791 or 1-888-478-7335 or email email@example.com
