The Regional District of East Kootenay includes the area from the Ryan Bridge east of Yahk to just north of Spillimacheen, and from the height of land in the Purcell Mountains to the British Columbia/Alberta border. The Regional District is divided into 6 Electoral Areas.  According to the 2006 census, the RDEK has a total population of 55,485 (including municipalities) and covers a total area of 27,560km2.

Electoral Area E includes Kimberley Rural, Meadowbrook, St. Mary's Lake, Sheep Creek, Skookumchuck, Ta Ta Creek, and Wasa and covers 4,266km2.

The Planning Department keeps a range of statistics on population, households, economic activity, building permit information, and other matters.  Some stats are compiled by the RDEK, but most information comes from Statistics Canada and the Provincial Government. The census contains information on age and gender of residents, marital status, immigration, language, ethnic origin, labour force, income, education levels and housing costs.

The census includes all people who are permanent residents of the East Kootenay and certain types of non-residents. It does not include visitors or seasonal residents.
