How Much Does It Cost?
There is no charge for regular household garbage, yard and garden waste (under
6" in diameter), chipped green wood waste, auto batteries or propane tanks
(under 100lbs).
User Fees do apply to
some other items, and are in effect at the Fernie Transfer
Station.
What About My Recyclables?
A yellow recycling bin is located at the entrance to the
Transfer Station. The yellow bin takes mixed recyclables including
all paper, cardboard, magazines, fax paper, envelopes, tin cans, aluminum cans,
and plastic milk jugs. There is also a green bin for glass -- the only glass
that can go in the bin is food-grade container glass (i.e./ pickle jars, jam
jars, olive oil bottles, etc). NO dishes or
cups, pyrex, corel ware, ceramics, pottery, ornamental glass, picture frames,
window glass or lightbulbs. For more information, contact
Loree Duczek,
Communications Manager or RDEK 489-2791 or 1-888-478-7335.
Are There Any Special Hauling
Requirements?
All loads being hauled to area transfer stations or landfills must be properly
covered or secured. Any loads arriving at the Transfer Station
are subject to DOUBLE CHARGES if
they are not properly covered or secured. This means waste must be in bags
or boxes, tarped down, or hauled in a canopied vehicle. This will ensure
garbage and debris isn't littered along our roadways and highways. Let's
all make an effort to keep our roads and properties clean!
Why Is There a User Fee on Tires
When I Already Pay an Eco-Fee at the Store?
The eco-fee you pay at the store goes into a provincial stewardship fund. That
money goes primarily to the haulers who pick up the tires and take them to the
recyclers. The Regional District does not have access to that fund. We encourage
you to leave your old tires with the tire shop when you get new ones.
What is Product Care?
Product Care is the company that oversees
the stewardship program for paints, coatings, flammables, pesticides, and
petroleum products in BC. They have established a number of paint-only
depots and depots that accept both paints and other household hazardous
wastes. For a listing of the depots in the East Kootenay region, click
here and if you would like more information on the Product Care program
itself, visit their website at www.productcare.org.
If you would like more information on the operation of the transfer stations, recycling, or solid waste management in general, please contact Loree Duczek, Communications Manager at 250-489-0315 or toll-free 1-888-478-7335
