How Much Does It Cost?

How Much Garbage Can I Take to the Sparwood Transfer Station?
There is no limit on how much garbage you can take to the Sparwood Transfer Station, which is located at the old landfill site along Highway 3. The site is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00am-5:00pm.

What About My Recyclables?
Yellow coloured recycling bins are located at Sparwood Heights, the Causeway Hotel, Silver Fox and the entrance to the Transfer Station. The bins take paper, cardboard, glass, tin cans, aluminum cans, grocery bags and plastics #1 to #6.  For more information, contact Loree Duczek, Communications Manager or call 489-0315 or 1-888-478-7335.

Are There Any Special Hauling Requirements?
All loads being hauled to area transfer stations or landfills must be properly covered or secured.  Any loads arriving at the Elkford, Fernie or Sparwood Transfer Stations are subject to DOUBLE CHARGES if they are not properly covered or secured.  This means waste must be in bags or boxes, tarped down, or hauled in a canopied vehicle.  This will ensure garbage and debris isn't littered along our roadways and highways.  Let's all make an effort to keep our roads and properties clean!

Why Is There a User Fee on Tires When I Already Pay an Eco-Fee at the Store?
The eco-fee you pay at the store goes into a provincial stewardship fund. That money goes primarily to the haulers who pick up the tires and take them to the recyclers. The Regional District does not have access to that fund. We encourage you to leave your old tires with the tire shop when you get new ones.

What is Product Care?
Product Care is the company that oversees the stewardship program for paints, coatings, flammables, pesticides, and petroleum products in BC.  They have established a number of paint-only depots and depots that accept both paints and other household hazardous wastes.  For a listing of the depots in the East Kootenay region, click here and if you would like more information on the Product Care program itself, visit their website at www.productcare.org.

If you would like more information on the operation of the transfer stations, recycling, or solid waste management in general, please contact Loree Duczek, Communications Manager  or call 250-489-2791 or toll-free 1-888-478-7335
