Edgewater Water System

Edgewater Water System

The source water intake for Edgewater is located in Lake Baptiste, approximately two kilometers southeast of town adjacent to the Elk Park Ranches. The water flows from Lake Baptiste, through the treatment plant, to steel reservoirs, and then on to consumers all using the force of gravity.

Edgewater water is disinfected with both UV and chlorine and is stored at the Hewitt Road reservoirs, which provide 1200m3 of treated storage. The RDEK has the capability to fully monitor the entire process through Edgewater’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system which alerts the operators of any potential problems.

Baptiste Lake Dam Upgrade Project

The Baptiste Lake Dam is in need of upgrades to bring it up to standards set by the Canadian Dam Association. The project has received funding from the Clean Water and Waste Water Fund and construction is getting started.

The RDEK and our construction contractor completed a pre-construction site visit the week of September 17th and work is now underway. There are several components to the project, including:

  • Raising the height of the dam using the existing one
  • Replacing the low-level outlet. This step is required by the Province and is a safety measure which allows the level of the water to be lowered if necessary.
  • Installing a log boom. The log boom will be installed to keep debris from the lake out of the spillway.
  • Max Helmer Construction will be on site throughout the construction and will be closely monitoring the water quality to ensure sediment and cloudiness in the water doesn’t increase

Construction is expected to be complete in mid-to-late November.
