Asbestos Disposal Information

A permit may be required for your renovation or demolition project. Please contact the appropriate building department for your area to find out more. Information provided here is only for disposal at Regional District of East Kootenay Landfills. See the Asbestos Management Guide below for information on how to manage asbestos waste.

Asbestos Management Guide

Asbestos is accepted at our three subregional landfills Monday to Friday between 10 AM and 3 PM. Asbestos loads must be booked through the Environmental Services Secretary prior to disposal a minimum of 24 hours in advance.

Homeowner Disposal Information

Residential asbestos disposal is anything less than 5 kg or a homeowner is transporting a load of asbestos directly from their home to the landfill. See below for Residential Disposal Form. This form must be completed and brought to the landfill with the asbestos.

Commercial Disposal Information

Commercial asbestos disposal requires a Hazardous Waste Manifest for the movement of hazardous waste. Information on where to get a Hazardous Waste Manifest and hauler/generator responsibilities is available in the linked below.

It is the generator’s responsibility to fill out Part A of the Hazardous Waste Manifest. Below is the information for each receiving facility.

Regional Household Hazardous Waste Depot

In 2019, the RDEK opened a year round Household Hazardous Waste Depot at the Cranbrook Transfer Station.

Any residents with any of the accepted materials listed in this brochure can take the items free of charge to the Cranbrook Transfer Station at 2405 22nd St N.

Contaminated Soil Disposal Information

The RDEK is able to accept contaminated soil and hydrovac slurry at all three subregional landfills. See guide below regarding requirements for acceptance.

Waste must be from within Regional District of East Kootenay boundaries.
