Stages in an Evacuation

There are three key stages in the evacuation process:

  • Evacuations Alert: When an evacuation alert is issued, that is your sign that you need to be ready to leave on a moments' notice. This is your time to prepare in case the situation worsens and you need to leave. Gather important papers, medicines, etc and make a plan. See "Preparing for an Evacuation" below for more tips.
  • Evacuation Order: When an evacuation order is issued by the local authority, people should leave the area immediately.
  • Evacuation Rescind: People under an evacuation order may return. An evacuation order or alert may be reinstated by the local authority if the threat returns.

Preparing for an Evacuation:

In emergency situations, it is important to stay informed. Listen to the local media; if you use social media, rely on trusted sources of information including your local authority's pages/feeds; and take steps to prepare yourself in case the situation worsens.

Prepare ahead by organizing an emergency supply kit with necessary prescription medications, personal toiletries, a change of clothing, insurance papers and other important documents. If you are evacuated, local officials will provide you with information about the location of a reception centre. You are encouraged to register all family members at the reception centre so, emergency responders (and family that may be calling for you) know that you are safe. This also gives responders a way to communicate with you directly while you are evacuated.

Short term assistance for immediate needs of food, shelter, clothing and emotional support will be available at the reception centre. Emergency Social Services volunteers provide assistance to people for the first three days after a disaster. Assistance includes assessment and referral to services you may need, short term help for food, clothing and shelter, emotional support and family reunification.
