Evacuation Alert RESCINDED for Fairmont Creek

The Fairmont Creek Evacuation Alert for 97 properties has been RESCINDED. 

“Weather conditions have substantially improved over the past two days, and given current and forecasted conditions, the decision has been made to lift the Evacuation Alert,” says Information Officer Loree Duczek. 

The Evacuation Alert was issued Saturday, May 30 amidst heavy, prolonged rainfall in the high elevation that feeds Fairmont Creek.  “Over the course of about 72 hours, our Fairmont Weather Station received approximately 80mm of rain, creating conditions where debris flood and flows are possible within that steep creek drainage,” explains Duczek. “We want to acknowledge the Incident Commanders, emergency personnel, RDEK Flood Response Unit, Emergency Operations Centre team, and Mainroad East Kootenay who all worked throughout the past few days to monitor conditions and respond as needed."

With the rescind today, there are no active Evacuation Alerts or Orders in effect in the East Kootenay at this time. Copies of the Rescind and corresponding maps can be found on the Evacuations and Alerts page on  www.rdek.bc.ca.

Although the Evacuation Alert has been lifted, residents in the Fairmont area and the entire East Kootenay are reminded about the ongoing need to use extreme caution and stay well back from river and stream banks as local waterways as the runoff continues. Localized flooding remains a possibility and the RDEK will be maintaining its sandbag stations for those wishing to protect their properties throughout the freshet period.
