We have received reports that a sow and cubs have been seen in and around the Markin MacPhail Westside Legacy Trail in the Grizzly Ridge Area and approximately 5km from the first parking lot on the north end of the Trail (Invermere end of the Trail).
Keeping our community and trail users safe is a priority. A mother grizzly with cubs is highly protective, so reports of a sighting does call for extra awareness.
Here are some tips and precautions trail users can take:
- Travel in groups and make plenty of noise as you go — talk, clap, or use a bear bell so wildlife can hear you coming
- Carry bear spray and know how to use it before you head out
- Keep children close and within sight at all times
- Dogs must be on a leash at all times to use the trail, but should also be kept under control
- Stay on the main trail
- If you encounter a bear, remain calm, do not run, speak in a low steady voice, and back away slowly
- When in doubt, sit it out. As bears make their way out and about with the onset of spring, if you are uncomfortable there are many other options to recreate elsewhere
Residents who spot the bear or cubs, should not attempt to approach, photograph up close, or engage with the animals. They should immediately report it to the BC Conservation Officer Service RAPP line at [hidden].
