Beware of Phishing Emails

Just a friendly reminder to always make sure you look at the full email address of a sender and beware of phishing emails - which are emails that look like they come from a legitimate organization (such as the RDEK) to try to trick people into clicking a link or or taking other actions that may compromise your security and provide these fraudlent phishers with access to your passwords, credit card details or other information.

We've recently been contacted by people who've received phishing emails that appear to come from the RDEK and ask the recipeint to click on a PDF attachment.  You can see a sample below that was sent on a day that we are holding Board Meetings and that references a Board resolution. Of particular note:

  • The return / do not reply email address is not even a real email
  • While it says it is from the RDEK, the RDEK isn't even spelled correctly (Rdek)
  • It's asking for someone to take immediate action, but there is no contact information
  • The logo is a standard windows image
  • The title is unclear/questionable: Rdek Document Arrival
  • The action being requested does not make sense

These are just a few easy things that indicate this is a fraudulent email.  If you ever receive an email asking you to click links or approve something (especially if you are not expecting it), call the organization to verify BEFORE clicking anything.
