Evacuation Order Issued for Lazy Lake Area

Due to increased fire behaviour on the Bill Nye Mountain Fire and based on recommendations from the BC Wildfire Service, the RDEK has issued an Evacuation Order for the Lazy Lake area, effective Tuesday, July 27 at 7:00pm.

“The safety of the public and fire crews is our top priority,” says Information Officer, Loree Duczek. “These decisions are not made lightly; and everyone within the evacuation order area needs to leave immediately.”

The Evacuation Order will include 41 properties in the Lazy Lake area. The map of the Evacuation Order is available on the Emergency Information page of RDEK’s website: www.rdek.bc.ca. Under the direction of the RCMP, Search and Rescue volunteers will be delivering the Order to the affected properties.

Emergency Support Services are available for permanent residents of the Evacuation Order area, who are asked to register at the Reception Centre at the Heritage Inn, located at 803 Cranbrook St N. Second homeowners and vacationers are encouraged to return to their primary residence.

The Evacuation Alert remains in place for 12 properties in the Lakit Lake and Holmes Rd area including one property on Wildhorse Forest Service Road.

The Bill Nye Mountain fire is currently estimated to be 1,916 hectares in size and resources on the fire include 40 firefighters, 2 helicopters and 4 pieces of heavy equipment.

The area restriction for Crown land in the vicinity of the Bill Nye Mountain fire remains in effect and details about this area restriction are available on www.bcwildfire.ca.
