Overnight Bin Fire at Edgewater Transfer Station

Overnight Bin Fire at Edgewater Transfer Station

Firefighters responded to smoldering bin fire at the Edgewater Transfer Station late last night.

“We had a small fire in the main garbage bin that resulted in heavy smoke,” explains Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Thomas Dobbin.

Dobbin and two firefighters from the Edgewater Fire Department responded to the call. The fire was small and quickly extinguished.

While the official cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Dobbin says this is a good reminder about the importance of properly disposing of ashes. “With the colder temperatures, more people are using their wood burning appliances and this is a good reminder to ensure that ashes are fully cooled and cold to the touch before transporting them for disposal,” says Dobbin. “All of our rural transfer stations have a designated bin specifically for ashes and ashes should never be placed in the main garbage bin, even if they are cold.”

The call for the fire came in just after 11:00pm last night.
