The RDEK’s Offices Closed September 30th in Honour of National Day for Truth and Reconcilation

The Regional District of East Kootenay’s offices will be closed September 30, 2021 for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“As part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, September 30 allows us to formally honour Survivors of the residential school system, their families, their communities, and those who didn’t make it home,” says RDEK Board Chair Rob Gay. “This is not a tragedy of the past. The loss and intergenerational trauma experienced as a result of the residential school system is part of our present.  We each have a responsibility to be intentional in taking action to move toward reconciliation and build a better future together.”

The RDEK has created a page on it’s website that includes list of local activities being held on September 30th to mark this important day, along with resources, the Calls to Action and other educational links.

The RDEK’s offices will resume normal working hours on Friday, October 1st.

In June 2021, the federal government voted to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a statutory holiday in response to the Truth and Reconciliations Commission’s Calls to Action. In August, the Province of BC marked September 30 as a day of commemoration marking Truth and Reconciliation Day.
